2024 Dates: Sunday July 28th to Sunday August 4th (Quartet Fellowship begins Friday July 26th)
The Dalí Quartet International Music Festival (DQMF) is a chamber music and string orchestra program founded in 2004 by Venezuelan violist Adriana Linares and violinist Carlos Rubio. The DQMF is organized as a program of ArCoNet, the Arts & Community Network, in collaboration with members of the Dali Quartet and the ArCoNet Faculty.
The DQMF accepts students from intermediate through advanced/semi-professional levels, and offers a unique experience through artistic, musical, educational, cultural, and social activities. Every year the DQMF attracts hundreds of musicians from all over the United States, Hong Kong, Korea, Bulgaria, Brazil, Ecuador, Colombia, Venezuela and Puerto Rico.
Daily activities for the 2024 modified version include: chamber music coaching/rehearsals, master classes, faculty recitals, fun social activities, and a variety of workshops topics such as: Career Opportunities in Music, College Preparation, Body Rhythm, Instrument Making, Body Awareness, Jazz Improvisation, Venezuelan Folk Music, Brazilian Percussion, Japanese Flute, Middle Eastern Music, and Puerto Rican Plena Dance.
Coachings and master classes are led by prominent artists and guests including ArCoNet faculty, members of the Dali Quartet, Philadelphia Orchestra, Annapolis Symphony and the New York City Ballet Orchestra, The Cleveland Institute of Music, Lynn Conservatory, Oberlin Conservatory, Indiana University, Michigan State University, the Curtis Institute of Music, and Temple University.
The DQMF concert experience kicks off with a Faculty Recital, followed by evening concerts featuring the Fellow quartets, and student groups.
Alumni from the DQMF have distinguished careers in music and have attended prestigious institutions including the Curtis Institute of Music, Reina Sofia Conservatory, The Cleveland Institute of Music, Lynn Conservatory, Bard Conservatory, the Colburn School, University of Michigan, The New England Conservatory, Indiana University’s Jacobs School of Music and Rice University’s Shepherd School of Music.

The ages for each division are approximate. Chamber music placements will be based on audition, level, and experience.

- One major and one minor scale in 3 octaves
- An etude of your choice
- A movement of a Bach Solo
- A portion of a concerto, sonata or show piece
For New students Youth and Pre-College:
- One major and one minor scale in 3 octaves

- A portion of a solo piece you are currently working on (Concerto, Sonata, or show piece)

ATTENTION PRE-FORMED QUARTETS

ROOM & BOARD
College students and under 18 participants may arrange their own housing. There are several hotels, and airbnbs in the area that we can help connect you with. Participants from the Quartet Fellowship Program may request housing.

Jesus Morales
Cello FacultyArCoNetBiographical Info
Jesús A. Morales Matos was born into a prominent musical family. Currently, Mr. Morales serves as Cellist of the Morales-Burgman Duo, The Dali String Quartet, Cello Professor of the Elite Strings Program (Lansdale, PA), member of the Lancaster Symphony Orchestra, Co-Principal Cellist of the Black Pearl Chamber Orchestra, and performs regularly with the Baltimore Symphony.
In 2007, Centaur Records released Mr. Morales’ CD of the Saint-Saens and the Lalo Cello Concertos to rave reviews, which he recorded with the Philharmonia Bulgarica conducted by his brother, Jaime Morales. Mr. Morales awaits the release of his new CD of the Brahms Cello Sonatas, also on the Centaur label.
Previously Mr. Morales served as Principal Cello of the Orquestra Sinfonica of Puerto Rico, Professor of Cello at the Conservatorio de Musica de Puerto Rico and the Children’s String Program. As an active chamber musician, he was a member of the San Juan Piano Trio and the Chamber Group Concerto.
Mr. Morales has won several competitions, including the Camerata Solo Competition for Cello, the Eastern Connecticut Young Artist Competition and the Grace Vamos Cello Competition. He has been a soloist with the New Mexico Symphony Orchestra, the Orquesta Sinfonica de Puerto Rico, the Camerata Symphony, the National Repertory Orchestra, the Starling Chamber Orchestra and the Festival de Orquestas Sinfonica Juvenil de las Americas.
He has participated in summer festivals including The Casals Festival in Puerto Rico, Banff Center for the Arts, Grand Teton Music Festival, Kneisel Hall Chamber Music Festival, Bowdoin Music Festival, Eastern Music Festival and Música Rondeña in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Mr. Morales also performed in recitals and chamber music concerts in Mexico, Venezuela, and St. Thomas, VI.
Mr. Morales holds a bachelor’s degree from The Cleveland Institute of Music and has done postgraduate work at The Cincinnati College Conservatory of Music. His cello teachers have included Dr. Ronald Crutcher, Alan Harris, Helga Winold, and Yehuda Hanani. He studied chamber music with Peter Oundjian.
Mr. Morales resides in Philadelphia with his wife, violinist Dara Morales, and young daughters Isabel and Karina.

Note: this is a sample schedule, students will obtain a detailed daily schedule on the first day of the Festival.
NOTE: The DQMF is not a solo repertoire program. Students must come already prepared to work on chamber music and orchestra music. There is no built in time to practice alone. Fellows and College students may use the morning to practice individually.

When do I need to be at the Festival?
Fellows will arrive on Friday July 26th for the 3pm WELCOME Meeting.
First day of Festival activities begin Sunday July 28th:

What time are the classes?
9am-3pm: Youth and Pre-College
11am-6pm: Fellows and Dali
Are there any classes or activities on Saturday and Sundays?
There are NO day classes at the NPCC on Sunday July 28th
Sunday August 4th we begin activities at 1pm for the Final Concert at 4pm.
How do I know what to do every day at the Festival?
All the students and faculty will receive a daily schedule every day. All students should expect to have: Daily orchestra rehearsals, daily quartet coachings/rehearsals, a variety of workshops, lunch, string sectionals and theory/score reading. (Some activities may vary from day to day)
What should I bring to the Festival every day?
- Your instrument
- A music stand (please label your stand)
- A pencil (please label)
- A metronome/tuner (optional, please label your metronome)
- CAMERATA and Chamber Music printed parts: All chamber/orchestra music in a 3-hole black binder (no loose parts please) PLEASE LABEL
- Snacks and water
- A packed lunch. There is NO microwave available. Please label your lunch boxes (lunch will be provided for fellows and faculty)
- ALL STUDENTS have a cubby in the Auditorium area where they will place all their belongings.
What should I pack if I come from out of town/country?
- Light summer clothes (temperatures between 85 and 95 degrees)
- Sport shoes (some days we may go to play sports at the park)
- Concert Clothes (specified below)
- Extra cash for fun activities (eating out, canoes, pool, mall)
Do I have to pack a lunch?
- YES! All students need to pack lunches, water and snacks.
- Dali Fest staff will provide a pizza lunch on SATURDAY August 3rd (NO NEED to pack lunch that day!!!)
Are concerts free?
All concerts for DQMF participants are free of charge. The faculty concerts are $10 general admission. The students recitals are $10 requested donation.
For the Chamber Music, how many rehearsals and coachings do we have?
- Chamber music assignments are based on the audition, experience and age.
- Each student is assigned one (1) chamber group to work with.
- Each group is assigned one (1) coach to work with for the week.
- Groups are also assigned a fellow coach in addition to the regular coach.
- Chamber groups will work on one or two movements of music assigned. (Fellows have a different curriculum).
- Festival faculty and students receive an email by MID JUNE with very important information about: group assignments, music parts and recordings to listen and get familiarized with the pieces.
- Everyone is expected to print parts and learn the music in advance.
- There are NO private lessons or solo practicing periods during the Festival week. Students may practice after Festival hours at home after 5pm.
- If a student is having difficulties with the parts, please notify the coach and we will arrange for an assistant or a teacher to help them after Festival hours.
- Each group will receive about 5 supervised chamber coachings and 5 alone chamber group rehearsals (Youth will always be supervised during all periods)
- Each chamber coaching/rehearsal will last 50 minutes. This will vary for the Quartet Fellowship Program students.
- Chamber Music Recital dates assignments are emailed by mid June.
- Each chamber group is expected to perform in ONE chamber recital.
- Aside from working with a coach everyday, students will have the opportunity to perform master classes on Thursday and Friday.
If my chamber group requires more rehearsal can we practice after festival hours?
If there are enough rooms, students can stay in the building for extra practice after festival hours.
For the Orchestras, what do we play and how many rehearsals do we have?
For 2024 there are 3 CAMERATAS at the Festival:
- Dali Quartet/Fellows (Fiesta no. 2 by Sonia Morales featuring Dali Quartet and Crisantemi by Puccini)
- Pre-College/College (Danzas de Panamá by W.G. Still and Bach double for Violin and Oboe. Featuring Nathan Amaral and Vladimir Escala)
- Youth (Vivaldi Quadruple Violin Concerto and Telemann Double Viola Concerto featuring Youth participants)
- Festival Orchestra (all students and faculty together for the FINALE called La Comparsa by Lecuna)
- Each student should receive the orchestra music 2 weeks prior to the festival. That email included links to recordings/videos of the music to help with the learning process.
- No seating auditions for the 2024 Festival.
- PLEASE PUT ALL YOUR MUSIC ON A 3 HOLE BLACK BINDER
How many rehearsals do we have for the orchestra?
Youth and Pre-College: every day from 1-2:15pm
Fellows: every day from 5-6pm.
Who are the orchestra 2024 conductors?
At Dali, we do a CAMERATA style chamber orchestra with no conductor. Faculty and Fellows will lead the sections.
What are we wearing for the concerts?
- Chamber Recitals: Black pants (long skirts) and color top. Each group will decide color top.
- Finale Orchestra Concert: Solid color dresses, solid color top, black bottom. (no T-shirts)
What to wear for the First Day?
If you are a returning student of faculty, please wear a Festival Shirt from other years (for FUN)
If you are a faculty or fellow, please wear the 2024 Festival shirt so we recognize who you are. We will distribute them by the meetings.
Do we have any Fun Activities outside of the Festival?
Everyone has lunch time from 12-1 during lunch. Students go outside and play sports, games and relax.
There is a Family/Faculty and Student Picnic (Optional)
- Sunday July 28th at 11am at Peace Valley Park
- Some other nights the students that live with host families may go out to dinner, park or sightseeing.
- We have evening concerts on selected days, so sometimes families and faculty go out to dinner afterwards.
